‘Tumbbad’ re-release beats ‘The Buckingham Murders’ to score Rs 1.75 crore box office opening |
According to Sacnilk.com, the film that won critical acclaim 6 years ago, received a warm reception from audiences eager to re-watch the film, while still others flocked to theatres to catch the movie on the big screen for the first time.
On its re-release, Tumbbad shattered its original box office records which earned an estimated collection of Rs 65 lakhs on its first day. ‘Tumbbad’ also outperformed the opening day collection of Kareena Kapoor Khan‘s new Hindi film, ‘The Buckingham Murders‘, which earned around Rs 1.25 crores nett.
The film has also become the first movie to surpass the collections of films like ‘Sholay‘, ‘Mughal-e-Azam’, and ‘Rockstar’ on its opening day as a re-release.
Adding to the buzz around the film, the makers announced ‘Tumbbad 2‘ at the end of the screening. The teaser shared in theatres opened with Vinayak and his son Pandurang, and a voiceover delivering a foreboding message, “Samay ka pahiya gol hai, jo beet gaya woh fir laut ke aayega… darwaaza bhi ek baar phir khulega.”
As the teaser closes, the words “Pralay, Pralay phir aayega” echo, teasing all that is set to unfold in the next chapter.
Directed by Rahi Anil Barve, ‘Tumbbad’ originally grossed approximately Rs 10 crores net (Rs 13 crores gross) during its lifetime run in 2018. With this strong opening, the re-release is expected to surpass that figure within its first week, especially if momentum continues to build over the weekend.
